Proposals for New Faraday Discussions

Proposals for new Faraday Discussions are always appreciated from members of the Faraday Division. They often arise through Specialist Interest Groups of the RSC but timely proposals from other groups are also gratefully received. Submissions from industrialists and those with close associations with industry are most welcome. There are three Faraday Discussions each year.

Proposals should be submitted (ideally as an attached Word file to an email) to:

Professor Colin Bain
Chair of the Faraday Standing Committee on Conferences
Department of Chemistry Durham University South Road Durham DH1 3LE United Kingdom
Tel: +44 (0) 191 3342138
Fax: +44 (0) 191 3342051

The key things to remember to include in a proposal for a new Faraday Discussion are:

  • A simple title that will attract a good audience.
  • A couple of clear paragraphs describing why the Discussion will be exciting and timely. Summarise the main sessions likely to be held.
  • A proposal for a Committee for the Discussion that will normally be about six or seven people from different institutions with a Chairperson. One overseas Committee Member can be useful.
  • A list of at least 20 possible speakers, with a strong international flavour and some from the UK. You should also suggest who might give the Opening Talk.
  • A proposal for a suitable venue with reasonably cheap accommodation, good travel connections and a lecture hall that could take up to 200 people.
  • Keep the proposal to a maximum of two pages. Remember that the proposal has to be approved by Faraday Council that consists of physical chemists from a wide variety of disciplines.
  • Ideally proposals should be submitted by the end of July three years before the anticipated year of the meeting. Faraday Discussions are now normally held in April, June/July and September.
