Jennifer West received her BS in 1992 from MIT, and her MS and PhD in 1994 and 1996 from the University of Texas. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology (1996) and is now the Isabel C Cameron Professor of Bioengineering at Rice University.

Her research focuses on biomaterials and tissue engineering and incorporates the synthesis, development and application of biofunctional materials. Areas of particular interest include: tissue engineered vascular grafts, NO-releasing polymers, mechanisms of restenosis and medical applications of nanoshells.

Professor West's awards include the 2003 MIT TR100 Technology Reviews' selection of 100 Top Young Innovators Award, the Rice Alumni Association's Hershel M Rich Invention Award in 2001 and 2003 and the Frank Annunzio Award from the Christopher Columbus Foundation (2004). She is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2005) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (2008). She was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor in 2006 and received the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas O'Donnell Award in Engineering in 2008. Professor West received the Celebrating Women in Science Award by BioHouston, Inc. in 2009 and the State Bar of Texas Inventor of the Year in 2010.
