Toshio Yanagida
Toshio Yanagida was born in 1946 and received his bachelors and masters degrees in Engineering Science from Osaka University. These were followed by his PhD from the same institution in 1976. He later became Assistant Professor in the Department of Bionics in the Faculty of Engineering Science at Osaka University and from 1996 has been Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biosignaling in the Graduate School of Medicine. This year he became the Specially Appointed Professor, Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, Osaka University.
In addition to the academic positions already mentioned Professor Yanagida was the President of the Biophysical Society of Japan from 2002 to 2003. He was the Research Director, Formation of Soft Nano Machines, CREST, JST from 2002 to 2008. Since 2008 he has been Program Coordinator of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and he is currently a special advisor for the foundation of the Systems Biology Center at RIKEN.
Among his many awards have included the 7th Osaka Science Award, the 4th Tsukahara Memorial Award (Brain Science Promotion Foundation), the 1st Matsubara Lecture Award (Gordon Conference), 25th Naito Memorial Science Promotion Award (Naito Memorial Promotion Foundation), The Japan Academy Award, The Imperial Award and the 1998 Asahi Award (Asahi Newspaper Culture Foundation).
Professor Yanagida's research focuses on single molecule imaging, including FRET, cryomicroscopy and other techniques. He has a particular interest in molecular motors their role in cell dynamics and runs the Soft Biosystems Group at Osaka University.
