Microfluidic and nanotechnologies for chemistry, biology, and bioengineering

Rustem Ismagilov was born in 1973 in Ufa, Russia. After graduating from Higher Chemical College of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994 (Moscow), he received a Ph.D. with Stephen F. Nelsen in physical organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998. His postdoctoral work was with George M. Whitesides at Harvard University. He began his independent career in 2001 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, Department of Chemistry, where he is now an Associate Professor. He won a number of awards, including Beckman Young Investigator NSF CAREER Award, Cottrell Scholar, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator, Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), Searle Scholar, TR100 Young Innovator Award, Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, and Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award. Ismagilov's research group uses microfluidics to understand complex chemical and biological reaction networks. This work involves development of microfluidic technologies, validating these technologies by characterizing function and structure of biomolecules, and using these technologies to control complex reaction networks in space and time.
