Michael grew up in Burnley, Lancashire. He studied for his first degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Sheffield followed by a PhD focusing on bacterial amylases at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Michael joined the RSC in 1997, having already spent a number of years within the publishing arena. Michael worked on journal production for several years before being appointed Commissioning Editor for Molecular BioSystems in 2007.
