Molecular BioSystems Editorial Board member, Dr Madan Babu has just been selected as an EMBO Young Investigator. 

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) set up their Young Investigator programme ten years ago which identifies some of Europe's most promising and creative young life scientists. 

This year, the programme received 123 applications out of which 17 were selected. The 2009 EMBO Young Investigators come from nine different countries with an average age of 36. Dr Babu is one of the youngest winners at 29 years of age.

Dr Babu has been a member of the Molecular BioSystems Editorial Board since January 2008. After obtaining his first degree from  the Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University, India, he went on to pursue his doctoral research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge working with Dr Sarah Teichmann. He subsequently received an NIH International Visiting Fellowship to work in the group of Dr L Aravind at the NCBI, USA, where he identified fundamental principles of the organization of biological networks. He has been an independent group leader at the MRC LMB since 2006 and also holds a fellowship at Darwin College, Cambridge. His research focuses on the structural, functional and evolutionary constraints that shape biological systems.

The Young Investigators are selected each year by EMBO Members based on the quality of their scientific work. Those selected receive financial and training benefits as well as new opportunities for collaborations with other scientists.
