Rich Text Format

Rich Text Format (RTF) files are preferred when the Word or WordPerfect formats are unavailable. They can be produced by most word processing packages, usually via the "Save As..." or "Export" menu options.

1 - General guidelines

When creating your original document, following these guidelines will make it easier to produce useable Rich Text files:

  • Avoid using unusual fonts; always embed any fonts used, and try and use only the following:

    • Times New Roman
    • Arial
    • Helvetica
    • Symbol

  • Do not insert graphics into the text file - save graphics separately, use place markers (e.g. "Scheme 1 here") in the text, and include the graphic captions at the end of the file.
  • Do not use the auto-reference utilities of your word processing software.
  • When using reference management software (e.g. Endnote), please render as plain text before saving (i.e. remove all active fields).
