1.0 - Creating a new image
Start up Illustrator and follow the steps given below:
- From the "File" menu select "New...", and set the "Width", "Height" and "Color Mode" fields as shown below. The "Width" value shown (8.3 cm) is for single column width illustrations - for double column width images use a "Width" of 17.1 cm. Take care to set the units correctly. Then click "OK".

- Use the "Page" tool to adjust the page boundary placement so that all of the new page created in step (i) is printable. See the Illustrator Help files for more details on this (you may need to make the "Artboard" visible to see the boundaries).
- Create your image in the space shown, utilising the full width available.
