If PDF output from KaleidaGraph proves unsatisfactory, then save in TIF format. To make sure your image is saved in an RSC-compatible format, perform the following steps:

  1. Once the illustration is finalised, print your image out as a final size and quality check.
  2. From the "File" menu select "Export...", and then "TIFF".
  3. In the "Set Graphic Size" dialogue box that appears, select "Same as Plot Window", set the units to "cm" and "Scale Result by:" to "833%", as shown below. Click "OK".

  4. In the "Save Graph as" dialogue box, enter a meaningful file name (e.g. figure1.tif) and location, then click "Save".

  5. The file produced by steps 1 to 3 is large (~70 cm wide) and low resolution (72 pixels/inch). It can be used as it is, but if you have access to a graphics package such as Adobe Photoshop you can tidy up the format. You should:

    1. Alter the image "mode" from "Indexed Color" to either "Grayscale" (for non-coloured images) or "RGB Color" (for coloured images).
    2. In the "Image Size" function, change the "Resolution" to "600 pixels/inch" with the "Resample" option "off" (i.e. the number of pixels in the image will remain constant, and the image size will be reduced in proportion to the increase in resolution).
    3. Use "Save As..." to resave the image with "LZW compression" selected.
