2.2 - Saving an image in TIF format

If PDF output from SigmaPlot proves unsatisfactory, then save in TIF format. To make sure your image is saved in an RSC-compatible format, perform the following steps:

  1. Once the illustration is finalised, print your image out as a final size and quality check.
  2. From the "File" menu select "Export...".
  3. In the "Export File" dialogue box that appears, set the "Save as type:" pull-down menu to "TIFF RGB Compressed (.tif)", then enter a logical file name (e.g. figure1.tif") (see below). Click "Export".

  4. In the dialogue box which appears next, set the "Final figure dpi:" to "600" and the "Color depth:" to either "Monochrome" (for black and white images) or "24-bit" (for colour images). Click "OK".

  5. The file produced by steps 1 to 3 is large (~33 cm wide) and low resolution (150 pixels/inch). It can be used as it is, but if you have access to a graphics package such as Adobe Photoshop you can tidy up the format. You should:

    1. In the "Image Size" function, change the "Resolution" to "600 pixels/inch" with the "Resample" option "off" (i.e. the number of pixels in the image will remain constant, and the image size will be reduced in proportion to the increase in resolution).
    2. Use "Save As..." to resave the image with "LZW compression" selected.
