About the Winner
Scott Dalgarno took his MChem and PhD at the University of Leeds, working under the supervision of Prof. Colin Raston and Dr. Michaele Hardie on the assembly of p-sulfonatocalix[n]arenes (macrocyclic water soluble molecules). In these studies he focused on forming challenging new architectures from multi-component host-guest systems, including a series of molecular capsules and a rare nanometre scale spheroidal array comprising 12 calixarene subunits.
Following this he took up a postdoctoral research position with Prof. Jerry Atwood at the University of Missouri where he worked on the assembly of large molecular capsules. In particular he was involved in the encapsulation and study of probe molecules within hydrogen-bonded nanocapsules, and the synthesis of a series of metal-organic analogues, with associated investigations into their host-guest properties.
In 2007, at the age of 29, he was appointed to the post of lecturer at Heriot-Watt University where he has established an independent research group investigating various aspects of supramolecular chemistry.
His studies into the programmed non-covalent assembly of p-carboxylatocalixarenes have resulted in gaining a high degree of control over calixarene nanotube packing in the solid state.
Furthermore, conformational control over these functional building blocks has recently been combined with polynuclear metal cluster design to afford unprecedented metal-organic calixarene nanotubes that possess large channels suitable for guest exchange.
Through collaboration with Dr. Euan K. Brechin at the University of Edinburgh, he has used also calixarenes to isolate a series of polynuclear metal clusters that can be readily tailored to behave as either Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) or magnetic refrigerants.
