- Chemistry World Entrepreneur of the Year - Professor David Haddleton, Warwick Effect Polymers Ltd
- Teamwork In Innovation - Merck Chemicals Ltd and a joint team from Syngenta, Avecia, Cambridge University and AstraZeneca
- Creativity in Industry - Dr Peter J H Carnell, Johnson Matthey Catalysts and Dr Dave Cartwright, recently retired from Syngenta.
Awards of £4000 were presented at a dinner in Burlington House hosted by RSC Chief Executive, David Giachardi and ITF President, Dr David Bott. We were delighted to welcome David Fyfe, CEO, Cambridge Display Technology Ltd as our guest presenter.
David Haddleton from Warwick Effect Polymers Ltd (WEP) was pronounced 2004 Chemistry World Entrepreneur of the Year for his work in the area of Controlled Radical Polymerisation, which has enabled WEP Ltd to nano-engineer novel designer polymers and macromolecules for use in the high value pharmaceutical, personal care and electronics industries.
Researchers from Merck Chemicals Ltd and a joint team from Syngenta, Avecia, Cambridge University and AstraZeneca, each received the Teamwork in Innovation award, for exceptional work on a collaborative project. The team from Merck Chemicals in Chilworth, Southampton, won its prize for the development and commercialisation of ionic liquids in the chemical industry. A joint team from Syngenta, Avecia, Cambridge University and AstraZeneca led by Dr Steve Smith, were acknowledged for their work which has led to the successful development of a new enabling catalyst technology.
Lifetime achievement awards, honouring the outstanding contribution of an individual to innovation in chemical science in their organisation were awarded to Dr Peter J H Carnell from Johnson Matthey Catalysts and Dr Dave Cartwright, recently retired from Syngenta.
