About the winner
Alois Fürstner obtained his PhD in 1987 from the Technical University of Graz, Austria. After a postdoctoral stint with the late Prof. Oppolzer in Geneva and completion of his habilitation in Graz, he joined the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in 1993, where he got promoted to the rank of Director in 1998.
His research interests gravitate toward fundamental and applied organometallic catalysis, with major emphasis on the development and use of alkene and alkyne metathesis, iron catalyzed bond formations, as well as noble metal catalysis.
In recognition of his achievements, he received numerous awards, including the Leibniz prize of the German Science Foundation (1999), the Thieme-IUPAC award (2000), an Arthur C. Cope Scholar award of the ACS (2002), a Centenary Lectureship of the RSC (2004), the first Mukaiyama Award of the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan (2005), the Otto-Bayer prize (2006), the Heinrich Wieland prize (2006), and the Janssen Pharmaceutica Prize for Creativity in Organic Synthesis (2008). He is member of the German National Academy "Leopoldina".
