About the winner

Dr Bill Beveridge is currently Head of Chemistry at Dollar Academy in central Scotland. His early love of Chemistry was ignited by the charismatic Robin Murray, then Principle Teacher of Chemistry at Queen Anne High School . "Mad Murray" treated classes to an intoxicating blend of experimental work, chemical anecdote and theatrical spectacle. Bill went on to study Chemistry at Heriot-Watt University , graduating top of his year and securing numerous prizes including the University's premier undergraduate award, a Watt Club Medal. Having secured a Carnegie Scholarship, he went on to undertake a Ph.D. with Drs. John Parker and Chris Johnson investigating the Unimolecular Dissociation of Group IV Quaternary Cations during which time he was awarded the Michael Barber prize at the British Mass Spectrometry Society's 1992 annual conference.

In 1993 he was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy at Brighton University. Having discovered a love of teaching, he completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education at Moray House Institute of Education under the inspirational guidance of Dr Douglas Buchanan. Over the years that followed Bill has been involved in a wide-range of activities connected with supporting teaching and learning.

In 2006 Bill took up a part-time post as an Education Representative for the RSC. In this capacity he had the opportunity to become more intensely involved in the promotion and development of practical work to support teaching in Scottish schools. In 2008 he was seconded to the Scottish Qualifications Authority to support the development of new Higher and Advanced Higher Chemistry courses.
