About the winner

Andrew Orr-Ewing is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Bristol.

He graduated in Chemistry from the University of Oxford where he remained for postgraduate study with Prof G. Hancock, receiving his D.Phil. in 1992.

Following a two-year period as a post-doctoral researcher with Prof R.N. Zare at Stanford University, Andrew joined the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol in 1994 as the Royal Society Eliz. Challenor Research Fellow, and was subsequently appointed as a lecturer and reader, followed by promotion to a personal chair in 2004.

His research interests span experimental and computational chemical reaction and photodissociation dynamics, atmospheric chemistry, organic photochemistry, and development and analytical application of laser-based spectrometers. In these fields of research, he currently collaborates with colleagues in Bristol, Oxford, the Netherlands, Russia, Japan and the USA.

He is a past recipient of the RSC Harrison Memorial Prize (1994), the Marlow Medal and Prize of the Faraday Division of the RSC (1999), the RSC Award in Optical Spectroscopy (2002), and holds a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award.

From 2002 - 2008, Andrew was chairman of the RSC Spectroscopy and Dynamics Group, and is the RSC's representative on the Athena Forum.  He is a member of the editorial boards of Molecular Physics and the Journal of Chemical Physics.
