MSc Studentships - Chemists in Industry / Public Service Rules


1. Purpose

The purpose of these awards is to provide members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, employed in industry or public service, with the opportunity to obtain advanced training leading to an MSc or MChemA degree in Analytical Chemistry / Science.

2. Eligibility of Student

i.  Membership of the Analytical Division.  Unless already a member, the student shall apply for Membership of the  Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry within one month of the commencement of the Studentship.  Failure at a later date to pay the membership fees will result in termination of the Studentship by the Trustees.

ii. Nationality.  There are no restrictions on nationality.

iii. Academic Qualifications.  The student should hold qualifications acceptable to the University applied to for entry onto the course.

iv. Employment.  The student shall have worked for their current employer for more than one year with responsibilities mainly in the area of analytical chemistry / science and have the permission of their employer to apply for an MSc or MChemA studentship.

v. Age.  There are no restrictions on age.

vi. Previous Postgraduate Study.  A person who has already undertaken a full-time postgraduate training, irrespective of the course or financial support, for a total period of one year or more, will not normally be considered eligible.


3. The MSc Course

i. The course must be a recognised postgraduate taught course leading to an MSc or MChemA degree in Analytical Chemistry or Analytical Science, over two years of part-time study at a UK or Republic of Ireland university or higher education institution.  Other largely analytical science courses; for example, pharmaceutical analysis, forensic analysis and environmental analysis are included in the scheme.

ii. The degree will normally be assessed from a combination of course work, examination credits and project work.


4. Finance

i. The Trust will pay the full course and examination fees for a two year part-time course at UK rates.  Such payments will be made directly to the University on receipt of an invoice.  A maintenance grant to the student will not be paid. The Trustees regret that they cannot meet the additional cost of fees at the overseas student rate.

ii. In addition to the above, the student may claim an additional grant of up to £200 per year towards travel incurred directly as a result of attending the course.


5. Termination of Studentship

i. A Studentship may be terminated or its conditions varied, at any time at the discretion of the Trustees.

ii. The University and Employer are required to make periodic reports to the Trustees on the student's progress.

iii. Any student whose progress or conduct does not satisfy the Trustees will have the award terminated.

iv. If the student, for any reason, changes employment or ceases to attend the course the Trustees must be informed immediately in writing.  Where possible at least one month's notice should be given of any change in circumstances.

Completed applications forms must be returned no later than 30th APRIL in the year of the proposed Studentship.  Applicants will be notified of the decision of Trustees by June.
