Sir George Stokes Medal Rules

The Sir George Stokes Medal was established in 1999 to recognise the multidisciplinary dimension of analytical science and to enhance the image of the Royal Society of Chemistry as an outward-looking and international organisation. The work of Sir George Stokes on photochemistry exemplifies the contribution of distinguished scientists working in complementary disciplines, not only to the science of analytical chemistry, but also to many other fields of scientific endeavour.

  1. The award of the Sir George Stokes Medal will normally be considered biennially by the Honours Committee, which will make a recommendation to the Analytical Division Council of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
  2. Members of the Honours Committee shall not be eligible for any of the awards within its remit during their period of service.
  3. The award will consist of a Gold Medal and Certificate and will normally be given at a scientific meeting of the Analytical Division.
  4. There are no restrictions on age, nationality or country of residence. Candidates do not need to be members of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
  5. The Award will be for outstanding and sustained contributions to analytical science by work in a complementary field, which has led to developments of seminal importance to chemical analysis.
  6. Details of the award shall be published in RSC News and elsewhere.
  7. The merits of a particular candidate may be brought to the notice of the Honours Committee by means of a nomination sent to the RSC Analytical Division. The nomination should be accompanied by a supporting statement describing fully the outstanding contributions made by the candidate, biographical details, including a list of publications where possible, and the details of two referees.
  8. The Honours Committee shall be at liberty to request additional information.
  9. An award shall not be made if it is considered that the attainments of no candidate reach the required standard.
  10. The decision of the Council of the Analytical Division shall be final.
  11. Any alteration to these Rules shall be subject to the approval of the Council of the Analytical Division and the RSC Awards Committee.
