EPSRC Funding Opportunities

The EPSRC through its Chemistry and Life Sciences Interface programmes supports high quality work at the interface between Chemistry and the Life Sciences.

Forms of support include:

  • Post Doctoral Mobility - encourages grant holders to form new collaborations by enabling EPSRC supported postdoctoral research assistants to receive an additional year's support to move departments and stimulate new collaborations across disciplines including the life sciences.
  • Advanced and Senior Fellowships - support outstanding candidates for up to 5 years of research. Proposals are welcome from physical scientists who wish to explore the life sciences interface.
  • Metrology for Life Sciences - is a managed activity, which has encouraged physical sciences and life scientists to collaborate in developing new methodologies and instruments for measurement in biological systems (in collaboration with BBSRC, MRC and NERC).

Proposals that aim to further biological understanding at a molecular level, of relevance to the BBSRC remit, are considered by the Biomolecular Sciences Committee. This joint BBSRC/EPSRC Committee encourages proposals in priority areas where it wishes to stimulate the community. BMS is administered by BBSRC on behalf of both Councils. The two Councils also support studentships in BMS's remit through targeted calls. In addition we have been trying to stimulate "Technologies for Functional Genomics" through two focused calls. Additional research ideas in this area are encouraged.

EPSRC supports the MRC highlight notice in Chemical Tools for Biology, which aims to stimulate the use of chemical tools in areas of biomedical research that will maintain or improve human health. In addition with MRC we have been fostering new collaborations through discipline hopping. There will be a further call this year.

If you are considering working at this interface and wish to gain Research Council funding you are strongly encouraged to contact the EPSRC or sister Research Council before submitting any proposal.
