Rules and Criteria for the JWT Jones Travelling Fellowships
To be eligible for a JWT Jones Travelling Fellowship, a candidate must:
- Be a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry
- Be aged under 45 years, although an extension to a maximum of seven years may be allowed for a career break due to having been temporarily withdrawn from research
- Submit a completed application form prior to 1 January, 1 April or 1 October. A decision will normally be made within two months.
- Hold at least a doctorate degree in chemistry or a related subject and already be in post and actively engaged in independent research in that subject.
- Produce evidence that the theoretical and practical knowledge or training to be acquired in the foreign laboratory will be beneficial to his/her scientific development.
- Return to his/her country of origin (i.e. the country in which the candidate is normally considered to be resident) upon termination of the Fellowship so that his/her home country may benefit from his/her broadened knowledge
All applications must be accompanied by a letter of nomination from the applicant's Head of Department. In addition, a letter of acceptance from the host Head of Department must be obtained and submitted with the application form.
Terms of Tenure
It is anticipated that several Fellowships will be awarded each year to those wishing to spend a minimum of one month in a scientific laboratory abroad. In general, a maximum period of three months would be envisaged.
The award will consist of a lump sum designed to cover, either partially or fully, an economy class air/railway ticket and a subsistence allowance.
It is normally expected that the institute or origin and/or the host institute will contribute to defray any remaining expenses incurred by the Fellowship holder.
Reports and Publications
As soon as possible after the end of the visit, the Fellowship holder is required to submit a report on the work accomplished to the Fellowship Committee. This report should not normally exceed 500 words and should be co-signed by the Fellow and his/her host.
Any publications resulting from the stay abroad must include an acknowledgement that the author held a JWT Jones Travelling Fellowship from the Royal Society of Chemistry. One reprint of each publication should be sent to the Fellowship Committee.
