Executive Summary - The future prosperity of the United Kingdom depends on a strong and expanding science and engineering base. To realise this vision of the UK's knowledge-based society also requires a scientifically literate public who are able to engage in debates about potential new technologies. These are only sustainable if the UK maintains its capacity to carry out world-class research both in respect of infrastructure and trained personnel.
