Waste Management

06 April 2010

This Note gives a general overview of the principles of waste management. The Note does not cover specific issues relating to energy efficiency or the management of radioactive or biological waste.

Waste management has become increasingly important as organisations have considered the impact of their activities on the environment.

The production of waste is seen increasingly as a form of inefficiency and misuse of resources. Consequently, waste management provides for the conservation of resources, efficiency, cost savings, carbon reduction, pollution prevention and the protection of the environment. Waste management should, ideally, be an integral part of an organisation's environmental management system.
