New legislation and increasing public awareness regarding environmental matters make strategic planning for waste minimization and the development of more environmentally friendly products and processes key issues for all manufacturing companies. High environmental standards will be essential to profitability in the increasingly competitive EC and global markets of the future. It has been estimated that expenditure on environmentally friendly products, processes and services in the 1990's will exceed $1000 billion in the EC alone with a similar expenditure expected in North America.
