Senior Sports Scientist

00:09 I started off an undergraduate in Sports and Exercise Sciences at the University of Limerick in the Republic of Ireland,

00:16 and I graduated from there and I went straight over to England, to Loughborough University

00:20 where I undertook a masters in Sports and Nutrition,

00:24 and upon getting a good grasp of the lead athletes there, I quickly found my footing and I

00:30 I went to do a PhD in Wales with the Wales Rugby Union and the University of Glamorgan.

00:35 Following my PhD I went to the English Institute of Sport,

00:40 where I worked with some of the lead athletes in the system for 2 and a half years,

00:45 and upon leaving there I came and commenced employment at the British Olympic Association.

00:51 My current role is Senior Sports Scientist and that involves a number of distinct roles within the organisation.

00:51 The primary one is to lead and develop sports science-related projects with a number of sports

01:02 in the lead up to, and following, our Olympic Games in 2012.

01:07 It’s no coincidence that world records and personal bests are continually broken,

01:11 chemistry has a big part to play in that, in terms of answering solutions and

01:15 and making sure that we individualise our training programmes as much as we can.

01:21 Having a good chemistry profile on an athlete will help us dictate that and give us the best

01:29 performance solution, matched to the individual athlete in question.

01:37 The role of chemistry is fundamental to my job, in that

01:41 no matter what aspect of physiology or human biology you work in, you always have to bring it back to the basics.

01:49 And for me, the very basics is chemistry itself, it’s the metabolic machinery,

01:54 it’s what’s going on at a cellular level,

01:56 so for me biochemistry is a crucial component to what I do on a daily basis.

02:00 A project we’ve got going on at the moment is looking at different recovery strategies

02:05 and how we can optimise that in the field,

02:08 and to give you an understanding of some of the chemistry involved,

02:11 we traditionally take some blood samples or saliva samples to monitor how different proteins change

02:17 and different metabolic profiles around some of the post-exercise samples that we take.

02:25 The end goal is always to improve performance,

02:28 no matter what our project focus is, it should really have a performance focus

02:33 and have some clear rationale as to what we’re actually doing.

02:36 Yes we do carry out some innovative work here and that may not have performance,

02:40 or immediate performance benefits today

02:43 but ultimately what we’re trying to answer is some of the questions for tomorrow as well.

02:51 I can see some vast developments in the future, trying to bring the laboratory on to the field,

02:57 and that has quite similar parallels to actually mainstream medicine itself.

03:02 I guess some of the biggest frustrations for a medical doctor or a sports science

03:07 or exercise physiologist is having to take a biological sample and send it to a laboratory

03:12 and sometimes you could be waiting days or up to weeks for that feedback to come back.

03:17 I think one of the main areas of development for the role of a chemist

03:21 is to actually liaise with some of the technology-driven solutions that are currently out there,

03:26 and making sure that we can extend the laboratory analysis and we can extend that into remote,

03:33 compact and easily transmitted results in the field itself.

03:37 There are vast opportunities for people with a mainstream chemistry degree,

03:41 simply because you’ve got so much of an advantage over other people in other positions because

03:46 from a human biology perspective you can relate it back to the very cellular level.

03:51 What the key is, in trying to specialise that approach is making sure you apply it as much as possible.

03:57 That could be in technology, it could be in sport, it could be in medicine,

04:02 so just try and keep an eye, what does it relate to and how can I actually affect that?

04:11 I’ve been very lucky in that I’ve always had modules in mainstream biochemistry

04:15 throughout my academic career,

04:18 it has provided me with the reassurance that when I am reading a scientific journal,

04:22 or a coach asks me a question; I have that weaponry to actually say

04:28 ‘well I really think from a cellular level what I’m saying is correct’,

04:31 because I can start linking A to B and B to C.

04:35 I think without a clear understanding of what goes on at a cellular level,

04:41 it’s very difficult to be able to answer those questions correctly and confidently.

04:49 If someone wanted to get into my line of work I would probably advise them to get a

04:53 good understanding of basic sciences first and foremost, so that would be biology and chemistry.

05:00 I would always tell them try to and keep an eye on other industries,

05:03 so you can actually apply that and try and get as much work experience,

05:07 maybe just an internship, or asking to shadow someone for a day or two in industry

05:13 but trying to bridge that gap between what happens in a laboratory and basic science

05:18 to what goes on in the field I think is where the vast majority of employment is going to be,

05:24 certainly from an exercise, physiology perspective.

How did I get started?

I started off as an undergraduate doing sports and exercise sciences at Limerick University, then I went on to do a Masters in sports and nutrition at Loughborough after which I went on to do a PhD with Wales Rugby Union at the University of Glamorgan.

Career progression

I had a period at the English Institute of Sport before moving on to the British Olympic Association, where I am now.
