A programme looking at more efficient disposal of domestic waste.
1986 was Energy Efficiency Year and the public was asked to concentrate in the conservation of energy. But energy conservation is only one half of the equation of energy efficiency, the missing half is the need for efficient energy generation. There are practical ways of generating power from waste. The methane gas given off from land fill rubbish tips could save a million tonnes of coal a year. Refuse derived fuel pellets can be sold to industry for fuel ..... . Researchers at Manchester ..... processing waste into oil. An ECO docu- mentary.
Issues: (i) why have we not used this form of energy before? (ii) are there any disadvantages to these systems? (iii) why doesn't the electricity industry install combined heat and power systems? (iv) why should we change, do we have a national energy policy?

This programme looks at toxic waste disposal.
In the West Midlands more waste is produced through the manufacture of the consumer goods we take for granted than in any part of the country. More waste is disposed of in this region than in any part of the country. At one of Europe's largest landfill sites south of Birmingham, one million tonnes of waste is handled every year. Dangerous waste chemicals not only result from industrial waste, there is household refuse and medical refuse often all mixed up into a dangerous chemical cocktail and capable of giving off inflammable gases. Heavy metals and poisons must also be disposed of safely in case they leach out into ground water and rivers. An ECO documentary.
Issues (i) will chemicals leak out from any of Britain's 5,000 landfill sites? (ii) how can toxic waste be disposed of safely? (iii) are the controls on waste disposal safe and efficient? (iv) are there public health risks associated with living close to tips?

Another witty cartoon from Leeds animation workshop. Subverting a themes from traditional stories, this entertaining and thought-provoking production helps to show why women are under-represented in science, engineering, and technology. It illustrates the subtle and not so subtle gender-type casting which still often prevail, from babyhood right up to professional level; but by taking a positive, practical approach, it encourages women to consider study and vocational training in these fields. A good discussion starter for anyone concerned with equal opportunities and related issues.
