Chemical Reactions

This program looks at a variety of different chemical reactions. Some we would often like to do with out, like rust. This program explains how rusting occurs and describes a number of ways of preventing it. We next look at detergents and the chemistry of how they clean, whiten, and soften. Finally we look at glue, yoghurt, and other products composed of soft matter, a state somewhere between the solid and liquid phases and the subject of much industrial research.

Chemistry

This program begins by summarizing the theoretical foundations of chemistry and explains the fundamentals of chemical bonding and reactions. It also deals with an interesting application of chemistry - brewing beer - and with chemical synthesis, which enables mankind to produce almost any chemical compound from almost any other.

Drugs and Poisons

The negative effects of the non-medical use of drugs and alcohol are compounded by the fact that drug abuse is so widespread. Why are these chemical substances so attractive? How do they work? What causes drug dependency in the first place? Modern science now has answers to most of these questions. For example, we now know we have to look to the very core of the brain and into the structure of the gene for answers. By analogy, our planet can also be said to be in the grip of a chemical overdose as a result of mankind's output of toxic substances. The program also outlines current knowledge on how pollution works, and on long term possible consequences on the biosphere.

Energy Today and Tomorrow

This program covers the drilling, extraction, and refining of petroleum: the installation of tubes inside the well so that the petroleum can be extracted; the separation of natural gas, salt water, and sediments before the petroleum is sent to the refinery; the separation at the refinery of the different constituents of crude petroleum, the manufacture of by-products, and distillation for gasoline.

New Energy Sources

As the need for energy increases while carbon and petroleum are known to be running out, the search is on for cleaner and safer fuels. This program looks at the pros and cons of natural gas as well as at tidal energy, which is renewable and does not cause atmospheric pollution, and at a new form of energy that may supply the engines of our future: green petroleum, which is manufactured from plants.

Taste

The sense of taste is one of our lines of defense against our potentially dangerous world around us because it enables us to evaluate the freshness and nutritional value of food before we eat it, taste is also a source of pleasure. How do the small organs called taste buds play both these roles at the same time? This program explains, as it takes us into the kitchen, the taste laboratory found in every house. The program explains some of the chemical and physical principles that govern the preparation of food and visits a chemical lab where the flavours and aromas of the future are being prepared today.

Textiles

This program shows us the secrets in the making of the most precious of all natural fibres: silk. A leap across time takes us to the discovery of microfibres, derived from petroleum and plastic, and used to create synthetic fibres. Finally we see one of the most recent techniques: the grafting of natural and synthetic fibres that are sterile, non rotting, fire proof, and antifungal.

Waste disposal

This programme shows how household waste can cause pollution of all kinds, but more and more of these wastes can be recycled effectively and economically. The result is reduced pollution and a useful new source of raw materials and energy. Hospital waste disposal presents the additional problems of contaminated waste, which is a series of problems depending on the nature of the waste: contaminated blood waste, for example, requires different treatment from radioactive waste. Finally, there is animal waste, which is natural enough but nevertheless the cause of pollution if it is not treated properly.
