It may not be possible to completely hold back the tide of job cuts threatening the pharmaceutical industry, but it is it seems possible to slow it down.
French drug maker Sanofi has announced plans to cut up to 900 jobs in France. Widespread news reporting in July suggested it had many more than that in mind. According to Reuters, the company reduced the number from 2,500 because of pressure from the French government.
The company says that the cuts will be made ‘mainly through voluntary measures’, such as ‘early retirements, mobility proposals and repositioning in France’. It is not planning to move or close any of its industrial sites in France, but the future of the R&D site in Toulouse, which employs over 600 people, remains uncertain.
