It’s been a very busy year for us so far. We started 2012 with the launch of the redesigned print magazine, closely followed a couple of weeks later by the release of the Chemistry World app (available via iTunes and Google Play).
A few months later, in May, we launched the Chemistry Worl
d science communication competition with the support of ChemCareers
, the RSC’s online careers fair, and consumer goods giant P&G
. For this, we assembled a panel of high calibre judges and offered some quality prizes – and it clearly paid off as we received more than 70 entries through the summer from all over the globe. The standard was such that the shortlisting process was very enjoyable (there is a lot of talent out there) and extremely difficult at the same time, a good problem to have! The competition culminated with the awards event in October. We now have a winner, who is a few pounds richer and whose entry will be published in the next issue of Chemistry World
together with a selection of photographs from the night.
Also in May, we launched the new look Chemistry World website. This is ‘work in progress’ so some areas of the site are still under development, but with a completely different look and feel and very much improved navigation and functionality (such as the ability to leave comments). I advise you to go online and check it out if you haven’t done so already.
As part of the redesign process, we have also changed our procedures so we are now an ‘E-first’ publication. All our content is published online before we assign it to a print issue, another reason to check our website regularly. In addition, our e-alerts have also been redesigned, so you may want to subscribe to have content sent to your inbox daily, weekly or monthly.
Also, for first time this year, we have established collaborations with some of the big chemistry-orientated trade shows, such as CPhI, Analytica and Achema, with the aim of securing bonus distribution and increasing awareness of the publication in international markets. This has proven to be a very successful initiative, and we are likely to ramp it up in 2013, so if you are out and about at these events do say hello. We maintain a very successful social media programme that allows us to regularly engage with more than 160,000 Twitter followers, 30,000 Facebook fans and almost 4000 users on LinkedIn. Our podcasts
continue to be a hit: in September, the Chemistry in its Element series
reached 1.5 million downloads.
