Traditionally mass spectrometry (MS) has been viewed as the gold standard of analytical chemistry. Conventional mass spectrometers are bulky, cumbersome, and inflexible. They are consequently often operated as a dedicated central facility rather than as part of a scientist’s everyday toolkit. The chemists who need the chemical information about their samples rarely have convenient access to an instrument until now.

Today, there is a revolution going in the chemist’s lab. Microsaic Systems has created a miniaturised mass detector (4000 MiD) and sample interface unit (MiDAs) for on-line and at-line analysis in the laboratory. Mass identification can now be employed by the chemist to provide additional information to influence reactions, product yield, purity and fraction selectivity.

The analysis is performed next to the ‘chemistry’ in the fume hood, glove box or lab bench requiring limited or no sample preparation by the chemist.

The unique design of the compact 4000 MiD ensures simple operation, reduced running and servicing costs against conventional MS systems.

Mr Colin Jump, CEO, Microsaic Systems

Colin Jump has nearly 30 years commercial and operational experience in the analytical instrumentation market. He joined Microsaic Systems in November 2012 from Shimadzu UK, a global manufacturer of scientific research instruments, where he spent 11 years as its Managing Director. He was previously European Commercial Director at SGE Europe (1999-2001) and prior to that, spent seven years in senior management and marketing positions at Mallinckrodt Baker in the UK and the Netherlands. Between 1983 and 1991 Colin served in sales and marketing positions at Bayer Diagnostics, Boehringer Mannheim and Wellcome Diagnostics.

Dr Richard Moseley, Product Manager, Microsaic Systems

Richard joined the company in 2003 as a Product Engineer. During this time he managed a development team to make miniaturised, chip-based components using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. He was awarded a BSc degree in Physics and Chemistry of Materials at the University of Durham in 1996 and gained a PhD in Device Physics at the University of Cambridge. Between 2000 and 2003, Richard worked in various R&D and manufacturing sites at Agilent Technologies, a spin-off of Hewlett-Packard.

Dr Tony Bristow, Associate Principal Scientist, AstraZeneca

Tony‘s focus is on the application and development of mass spectrometry at all stages in the development of pharmaceuticals. He was awarded a degree in Applied Chemistry by Sheffield Polytechnic in 1992, before carrying out a PhD on MALDI- ion trap mass spectrometry at Nottingham Trent University. In 1995 he moved to Kodak Limited, where he worked in both mass spectrometry and separation science, before joining LGC in 2002 to focus on FT-ICRMS, accurate mass measurement and MS/MS. Tony has published many peer-reviewed articles on his research in mass spectrometry, and is a regular presenter at both national and international conferences. He is an Associate Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick and a member of the Warwick Centre for Analytical Sciences External Advisory Board. Tony is an active member of the British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS) committee, of which he currently holds the post of Chair.

Bibiana Campos-Seijo, Editor, Chemistry World magazine 

Bibiana is the editor of Chemistry World and magazines publisher for the Royal Society of Chemistry. After completing a PhD in chemistry, she ran her own e-learning business before moving into publishing, first as a technical editor for the European Respiratory Society and then managing a portfolio of pharmaceutical titles at Advanstar Communications. In 2009, she moved to the Royal Society of Chemistry to lead the Magazines team.
