Carousel 6 Plus

Radleys has announced a new and improved version of its popular Carousel 6 Reaction Station, the world’s favourite parallel synthesiser.

The Carousel 6 Plusprovides chemists with an easy to use productivity tool that simultaneously heats or cools, stirs and refluxes up to six round bottom flasks from 5ml to 250ml under an inert atmosphere. The Carousel 6 Plus is ideal for all popular solution phase and solid phase syntheses.

The new streamlined design features chemically resistant, push on PTFE caps and an expanded range of round bottom flasks. It also delivers better flask-to-flask temperature uniformity and faster heating to 180ºC, both critical for effective parallel chemistry.

Fermentation and bioprocessing

Market place
Within the pharmaceutical industry, process analytical measurement of critical process parameters is one of the key elements of the Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) framework and Quality by Design (QbD) initiative of the US FDA and other global regulatory agencies. In situ measurement of critical process parameters enables more accurate determination of process kinetics and dynamics to create more detailed understanding, more accurate models, and the capability of real-time control. Mettler Toledo has developed a white paper that reviews the optimisation of fermentation and bioprocessing: Visit the website  to download this free white paper or contact us on tel: +44 (0) 1162 357070, email: enquire.mtuk@mt.com

Lab laundry

Miele has brought to market a range of washers for cleaning lab coats onsite. Thermal decontamination might be the preferred method, but the company says that not all textiles can withstand such high temperatures, notably those containing Lycra or polyester. In addition, onsite washing is typically cheaper. The units incorporate Honeycomb washing drums, made from high-grade stainless steel with a unique convex pattern to improve cleaning and reduce fabric wear.

LCMS vials

Waters has made available a new line of sample vials designed for liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS). The TruView vials are manufactured via a process that limits the concentration of free ions on the surface of the glass to reduce analyte adsorption.

Phenyl-hexyl for HPLC

Phenomenex has brought to market a new high pressure liquid chromography (HPLC) column in its Kinetex range, one with a phenyl-hexyl phase. The company says the phase is suited to separation of compounds that are difficult to sort out using traditional phenyl phases, notably aromatic hydrocarbons such as tricyclic antidepressants and explosives. The phenyl-hexyl phase is also suitable for hydrophobic compounds.

Light scattering for bio interactions

Wyatt is offering a light scattering system called Calypso for measuring biomolecular interactions. Composition gradient multi-angle light scattering (MALS) system allows researchers to measure the affinity and the binding stoichiometry of macromolecules in solution with no need for immobilisation or tagging, the company says. Conventional separation techniques, such as size exclusion chromatography MALS and field flow fractionation MALS, can be used to study such interactions, but they are associated with limitations. As the molecules become separated in the normal course of dilution and fractionation, they no longer interact. Also, the molecules are often outside equilibrium or not in a well defined kinetic state when they reach the detectors.

Flasks for cells

Porvair Sciences has launched a new range of cell culture flasks made of high pressure moulded, 100 per cent USP (US Pharmacopeia) class VI virgin crystal polystyrene. The flasks incorporate a low pressure gas plasma surface treatment that allows cells to adhere more efficiently thanks to lower hydrophobicity. In addition, the range has moulded graduations on the flask walls, opaque areas for laboratory markers and sector division marks on the dishes.

Mini mass spectrometer

Mosaic has introduced the Microsaic 3500 MID, which is according to the company the smallest, the quietest and the ‘greenest’ system for mass selective analysis of chemical samples in solution. The unit has a built in computer and no external vacuum pumps giving it a very small overall footprint and making it suitable for use in confined spaces, such as inside fume hoods, underneath flow chemistry and hydrogenation systems and alongside sample preparation and purification tools. In addition, the system has built-in fluidic components that can be coupled to standard syringe pumps and valves and sample injection loops.

Software for water researchers

Thermo Fisher has produced a new software package for researchers working in water and environmental testing laboratories. Built on the company’s flagship laboratory information management system (lims), SampleManager, the water and environmental lims is designed to help companies to comply with specific regulations.

HPLC column

Agilent has a new 300Angstrom column for liquid chromatography: the Zorbax 300SB-C8 with 1.8 mu.gifm particles. The company says the column, which is stable at up to 1200 bar, is ideal for protein analysis.
