New on the market
The invisible becomes visible
The HPV1 from Shimadzu of Milton Keynes, UK, is a new high speed video camera which provides sensitivity at ultra high speeds for recording research events. The camera uses IS-CCD technology that accumulates data in a chip at high speed during image capture and then reads it back for high speed recording. The HPV1 captures 100 images at one million frames per second, at a resolution which stays constant at 81,000 pixels whatever the speed and however poor the lighting conditions. This video camera can be used for research into combustion and thermal engineering, liquid atomisation and injection, fracture processes, rockets and other high-speed projectiles, fluid dynamics and visualisation of airflow.

24 reactions at the same time
The PLS Organic synthesiser from Activotec of Cambridge, UK, is a parallel synthesis tool for lead generation, reaction optimisation, accelerating process development and combinatorial catalysis. The synthesiser can perform up to 24 reactions simultaneously, with options for parallel washing and cleavage. The PLS Organic synthesiser accommodates a selection of glass solution phase and Teflon solid phase reactors (1 to 50ml) and performs powerful, variable-speed vortex mixing to copy with a variety of reaction media. The synthesiser, designed for individual chemists to use in their own fume cupboards, can be adapted to operate at elevated (up to 150?C) or sub-ambient temperatures (-80?C).

Evaporator for medicinal chemistry
Genevac of Ipswich, UK, has introduced the Model DD-4X as a high-performance centrifugal evaporator system. It has interchangeable rotors to handle the wide variety of sample types encountered in medicinal chemistry, including tubes, vials and microplates. The high-performance scroll pump, optimised evaporation chamber and powerful IR lamps facilitate rapid removal of most routinely used solvents, even higher-boiling solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). Efficient chamber cooling between runs is particularly useful to protect thermally sensitive samples when run immediately after higher boiling point solvents.

Dry vacuum
Welch Vacuum Technology of Skokie, Illinois, US, has introduced the Programmable self-cleaning dry vacuum system, for use with rotary evaporators, concentrators and gel dryers. The system incorporates a fully integrated vacuum pump and controller, numeric keypad and electronic variable control valve. The corrosion-resistant PTFE diaphragm pump and self-cleaning purge ensures longer diaphragm service life and reduced downtime. The system is ideal for use with a rotary evaporator for stripping high-boiling-point solvents such as DMF or low-boiling-point solvents like methylene chloride when using the integrated vacuum controller.

World first in magnets
Bruker BioSpin, headquartered in Rheinstatten, Germany, has launched the 950 US2-the world's first actively-shielded 950 MHz superconducting magnet. The 950 US2 combines Bruker BioSpin's UltraShield active shielding and UltraStabilized sub-cooling technologies. The 950 US2 magnet system delivers higher sensitivity and spectral dispersion, yet it has the same size cryostat and same cryogenic performance as the 900 US2. The 950 US2 features a 5-Gauss stray field and an overall footprint of less than 600 square feet of lab space.

Centrifuging made easy
Thermo Electron of Waltham, Massachusetts, US, has introduced the IEC CL series centrifuges in ventilated and refrigerated versions. Consisting of nine models with capacities ranging from 0.5 to three litres, Thermo's IEC CL series is designed to meet the performance and price needs of clinical and research laboratory personnel who perform protocols such as body fluid separation, microplate and micro-volume processing, and cell culture.
