New on the market

Analysing liquids
Emerson Process Management, St Louis, US, has launched the Rosemount Model 1056 single/dual input liquid analysis platform as a cost-effective 'workhorse' instrument for both original equipment manufacturer and end-user liquid analysis applications. It allows the user to choose any combination of pH/oxidation reduction potential/ion selective electrodes, resistivity/conductivity, chlorine (free, total, monochloramine, pH independent free chlorine), oxygen, ozone, and temperature measurements. The Model 1056 has a large LCD display giving easy-to-read process measurements. Four process variables, or diagnostic parameters, are displayed simultaneously from every screen giving operators information at a glance. Embedded predictive diagnostics provide warnings and faults when the sensors or instrument are not performing to specification.

Every nook and nano cranny
The new NanoIndenter from Asylum Research of Santa Barbara, US, is a module for Asylum's MFP-3D atomic force microscope (AFM) which facilitates quantitative surface characterisation.  The NanoIndenter consists of a flexure with a calibrated spring constant to which tips are mounted. This flexure is attached to the MFP-3D head which moves the tip to the surface. The NanoIndenter drives the indenting tip perpendicular to the sample where tip displacement and force are measured with the AFM's optical detector and the nanopositioning sensors. This facilitates force and positioning sensitivity, repeatable imaging, quantitative feature measurement, reliable and accurate imaging offsets, quantitative force curves, and precise positioning for manipulation and lithography. The NanoIndenter is available in standard (2000-3500Nm-1 spring constant) and low force (300-800Nm-1 spring constant) models, and a variety of tip materials and geometries are available. The NanoIndenter can be used to study elastic and inelastic behaviour of materials, dislocation phenomena, fractures in ceramics, mechanical behaviour of metals, thin films, ceramics, bone, biomaterials, soft metals, and polymers.

Air monitoring
Carltex, of Long Island, New York, US, has launched the Multinorm all-in-one instrument for monitoring indoor environmental and air quality parameters. Available measurements include air temperature, air velocity, relative humidity, dew point, illuminance, luminance, CO, CO2 and sound (class 1 and 2) analyses. The Multinorm can perform in online mode, displaying current measurements, or in logger mode, automatically storing all measurement values per logging interval. Software is included for data analysis, charting and reporting

Near infrared spectra
Malvern Instruments of Malvern, UK, has launched SyNIRgi, a near infrared chemical imaging product, building on the Spectral Dimensions Sapphire/NIRCI-2450 platform in terms of speed of data acquisition and increased sensitivity. A larger imaging area is provided, together with new sampling options. The ability to acquire >300,000 NIR spectra in a single measurement will be available as an option.

Lab reactor expanded
Radleys of Safron Walden, UK, has launched its updated Lara Expansion Hub, enabling computerised control of existing lab reactor systems and the integration of a wide range of third party laboratory equipment, including measurement devices, balances, thermoregulators/circulators, pumps, stirrers, temperature probes, pH probes and turbidity meters, as well as digital input and output devices. Combined with the latest version 2 Lara software, the Lara Hub controls and data logs a whole array of devices, allowing the user to log or repeat experiments, build product and process libraries and optimise reactions.

Drug screening
Npi electronic of Tamm, Germany, has introduced its ScreeningTool for fast precise automated screening of voltage- or ligand-gated ion channels in Xenopus oocytes. The ScreeningTool is based on a standard two-electrode, voltage clamp screening procedure, but performed in a 15 mu.gifl bath requiring only minimal amounts of sample. It provides automated drug application with millisecond resolution, high-speed voltage clamping, and very fast solution changes. The ScreeningTool combines the MSP9250 liquid handling system from Tecan Group of Männedorf, Switzerland, with a purpose-designed miniature recording chamber.

See clearly
Nikon has launched its Eclipse E100 educational microscope. With chromatic-free infinity (CFI) optics, the new microscope gives clear, bright images at every magnification, with correction for both chromatic aberration and curvature of the field of view.Simple and robust, the Eclipse E100 incorporates a number of design features that protect slides and objectives from damage. The Eclipse E100 has also been designed to be used with a range of auxiliary components and accessories, enabling the microscope to be used with phase contrast illumination or to be attached to a Nikon camera for digital image capture.
