'Raw energy.' Electrical discharges illuminate the surface of the Z machine, the world's most powerful X-ray source, during an accelerator shot. The Sandia National Laboratories accelerator has achieved temperatures which exceed 2 billion degrees Kelvin - hotter than the interiors of stars. Experiments carried out with the Z machine are used to generate data for simulations on supercomputers that help maintain the strength, effectiveness, and safety of the US nuclear deterrent, but fired repeatedly the machine could provide fusion power in the future.
