Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of microparticles of a synthetic drug coated with copolymers. Such copolymers either target the release of the drug in a specific part of the digestive tract or allow the drug to be released more slowly. This image by Annie Cavanagh and Dave McCarthy won an award in the Wellcome Image Awards 2009.
