NIR in small footprint

Ocean Optics of Diuven, the Netherlands, has launched the NIRQuest Spectrometer for near-infrared (NIR) applications ranging from moisture detection and chemical analysis to high-resolution laser and optical fibre characterisation. This robust, plug-and-play spectrometer is available in versions for 900-1700, 900-2050 and 900-2500nm coverage.

NIRQuest uses a high-performance indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs)-array detector in a compact optical bench with thermoelectric cooler and low-noise electronics. A high gain mode option improves system sensitivity for low light-level and low-concentration measurements. In addition, integration times as rapid as 1ms are possible.

NIRQuest's modular design and new grating options deliver more customisation for a wider variety of applications: moisture analysis in grains and cereals; chemical analysis of blood and tissue; bacterial detection in food and beverage production; nitrogen content monitoring of plants and soils; and chemical composition of pharmaceuticals. A special grating option and external triggering are useful tools for high-resolution (to 0.25nm FWHM) laser characterisation. NIRQuest Spectrometers are also available for integration into OEM devices.

The NIRQuest uses SpectraSuite Spectrometer Operating Software - a modular, Java-based spectroscopy platform that operates in Windows, Mac OS and Linux operating systems. NIRQuest can also be bundled with the Remora Network Adapter from Ocean Optics to turn the system into a multi-user spectral data server over Ethernet or your existing Wi-Fi connection.

Reaction station

Reaction station
Radleys of Saffron Walden, UK, has launched the Reactor-Ready - a multi-volume jacketed reaction station for labs involved in chemical synthesis or process development.

Reactor-Ready's quick-release clamp and quick connect hose couplings allow vessels to be exchanged with ease. Reactor-Ready's I-beam support clamp fits all major brands of overhead stirrer and ensures that the stirrer drive is always in the correct alignment.

A drop-in stirrer coupling allows the stirrer drive to engage with the stirrer guide below and provides powerful stirring up to 800rpm. The precision engineered PTFE stirrer guide provides excellent stirring and sealing performance with whip-free agitation.

The system features wide bore, insulated hoses and vessel connections which offer maximum flow rate and heating/cooling performance. Integral hose manifolds, attached to the support frame also allow rapid and clean thermofluid drain down during vessel exchange.

The system accommodates single and vacuum jacketed borosilicate glass vessels from 250ml to 5 litres, and features the V4 PTFE drain stopcock for operation from -60°C to 190°C, a DN100 polished flat flange with O-ring seal, 5 neck glass lid and Pt100 PTFE temperature probe.

Chemistry on iPhone or iPod touch

Symyx Technologies of Geneva, Switzerland, has announced that its ChemMobi App is now available free on the App store.

Chemistry on iPhone or Ipod touch

ChemMobi gives access to over 30 million chemical structures, chemical properties, suppliers and other information directly on their iPhone and iPod touch.

ChemMobi is powered by DiscoveryGate Web Service (DGWS) and ChemSpider search.

The ChemMobi App is available free from the App store on iPhone and iPod touch or from the website.

Vortex evaporation

Zinsser Analytic of Maidenhead, UK, has launched the CombiDancer (above) - a high speed vortex evaporator. A vapour sensor allows the speed of evaporation to be carefully controlled and when combined with sample heating and vortexing under vacuum, the following solvents can be evaporated: low-boiling point solvents, difficult mixtures such as water and acetonitrile, and corrosive liquids such as trifluoroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid.

Vortox evaporation

The MicroDancer (below) is an even more compact vortex evaporator for sample preparation solid phase extraction in the analytical laboratory, combinatorial chemistry, and high-throughput screening.
