Personal incubator

IKS International of Rosmalen, the Netherlands, has introduced the IVS-1203 personal incubator for individual laboratory workers to store samples at their workplace, under personally selected conditions. These novel incubators are small enough to be easily accommodated in laminar flow cabinets and other situations where a conventional incubator might be too large.   

The IVS-1203PS has a temperature range from 5ºC over ambient to 45ºC. The cooled version, the IVS-1203P1S, is uniquely small for a cooled incubator and has a range from 10ºC to 45ºC. Forced air circulation ensures even temperature distribution, and digitally set and displayed Peltier-effect heating and cooling give accurate temperature control ( ± 0.2 ºC).

ICP emission spectrometry

Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched the iCAP 6200 ICP (inductively coupled plasma) spectrometer for routine analytical laboratories. The iCAP 6200 enables powerful analyses using a range of pre-optimised sample introduction settings and provides the capability to handle low to moderate sample numbers in a wide variety of application areas, including environmental, food and beverage, toy safety and WEEE/RoHS testing.

The iCAP 6200 features an optimised purge gas distribution system, resulting in a dramatically reduced gas consumption rate. Additionally, the unique Enhanced Matrix Tolerance (EMT) torch design provides powerful performance while also minimising routine maintenance and contributes to reducing plasma gas consumption. 

The new ICP is equipped with a high-power, solid state radio frequency (RF) generator which has been field-proven in 2000 customer installations and has demonstrated the stability needed for even the most difficult sample matrices. The RF generator delivers extremely efficient coupling with the sample (>78 per cent), providing exceptional sample processing capability at 1150W. 
A powerful Charge Injection Device (CID) detector delivers up to five times improvement in performance compared to previous generation detection systems and enables complete coverage of the 193-769nm wavelength range.

Freeze drier

SP Industries of Stony Ridge, US, has launched the Virtis Ultra Freeze Dryer, which offers 22 sq ft of useable shelf space in a footprint of just 12 sq ft. Available with 25, 35 and 50 litre condensers, the Ultra can be configured for a wide variety of solvent loads and other options. The narrow footprint is achieved by placing the condenser chamber behind the product chamber.

Microvolume spectrophotometer

Astranet Systems of Cambridge, UK, has introduced the Astra Gene, a microvolume spectrophotometer that includes a patented sample holder to enable measurements to be taken straight through the pipette tip on sample volumes as small as 2 l. Complex sampling routines are avoided while sample integrity and user safety are maintained. Samples can even be recovered after measurement for further analysis or processing. Dedicated to life science applications, the Astra Gene spectrophotometer's intuitive software and unique sample handling makes measurement of DNA, RNA and proteins a simple and rapid procedure. 

 

2-in-1 microscope

Nikon Instruments of Amstelveen, the Netherlands, has combined the AZ100 Multizoom and C confocal microscopes to create the AZ-C1 - an imaging platform for developmental biology, cell biology, stem cell and tissue research. 

The AZ-C1 allows observations ranging from macro imaging of a whole organism to micro imaging of a single cell with one lens. 

 

Magnetic beads

GE Healthcare of Little Chalfont, UK, has introduced Mag Sepharose magnetic beads for the efficient capture and selective enrichment of proteins and peptides by electrophoresis and MS analysis.

The Mag Sepharose beads are available in the following formats: TiO₂ Mag Sepharose for the enrichment of phosphopeptides from complex samples; Protein A and Protein G Mag Sepharose affinity chromatography media for the capture of target proteins by immunoprecipitation; and NHS Mag Sepharose for covalent coupling of any protein containing free amine groups, used for various types of pull-down experiments.

The magnetic beads are well suited for small-scale experiments.

The high density of the beads allows rapid capture by magnetic devices, while the visibility of the beads ensures reliable collection of all target protein allowing concentration of low abundance target proteins in samples from millilitre to microlitre scale.
