Spectroscopy enters a new era with the discovery by Gustav Kirchoff and Robert Bunsen that substances emit different light spectra when burnt. The discovery led to the development of a system of fingerprints that could be recorded and compared. The ability to analyse light from the sun and other planets was also noted ultimately leading to the discovery of Helium by Norman Lockyer.
