Jonas Salk produces a vaccine for the devasting infectious viral disease Poliomyelitis. By 1955 over 4 million vaccination injections are given, resulting in a dramatic decrease in cases of the disease.
In 1958 Albert Sabin produces another vaccine which can be taken orally and is cheaper and easier to make. The World Health Organization has goals to eradicate polio completely in the first decade of the twenty-first century.
