Roentgenium
Discovered : by Hofmann and co-workers in 1994

Isolated in in Darmstadt, Germany

Origin : After Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen who discovered X-rays in 1895, for which he was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics. Element 111 was synthesized exactly 100 years after Roentgen's discovery. This naming lies within the long-established tradition of naming elements to honour famous scientists. Description :

A man-made element of which only a few atoms have ever been created, by fusing a bismuth atom and a nickel atom together in a heavy ion accelerator.
