Shaping a Healthy Future (COSHH and the Production of Pottery)

Shows how the potteries approved code of practice applies to a range a pottery processes in a variety of premises. The principles of COSHH and the control of the lead at work regulations are illustrated by examples of how to assess the risks arising from pottery production, matching control measures to them and how such measures should be used and maintained. Aimed at all potteries, it gives a practical insight for employers, employees and the self-employed on how to meet the requirements of the approved code of practice.

A Fatal Decision

A confined space is any place such as a chamber, tank, pit or sewer that by virtue of its enclosed nature presents a foreseeable risk from hazard. By failing to follow important new regulations on working in confined spaces, employers are putting the lives of both their employees and contractors at risk.

This 18 minute video, using compelling dramatisation, shows how to prevent costly accidents, as it follows investigators making enquiries into the deaths of two contractors. A Fatal Decision identifies potential hazards of working in confined spaces; and outlines the elements of risk assessments needed if employers or contractors have to enter a confined space.

These include assessing the confined space and the need to isolate it including - oxygen levels, hazards from the work to be carried out, establishing rescue arrangements.

The video also highlights the importance of the correct selection of personnel, who should be medically fit and receive correct information, instruction and training.

It also focuses on a safe system of work including: the task and hazards to be identified; information on method of working; relevant documentation to be issued; monitoring procedures; and correct selection of equipment for tasks.

A Fatal Decision is an essential safety training video for managers and employees working in confined spaces.
