A detailed review of the history of anaesthesia in the UK and USA from 1840's to the present. Particular emphasis is paid to the work of the mid-nineteenth century pioneers and on the recent developments that have taken place over the past 50 years. Contains stills of nineteenth century operations using ether and chloroform, and archive footage of open-drop ether anaesthesia.

This programme explores the role of the gas nitric oxide (NO) in the human body, from toxic shock syndrome to blood pressure control to impotence. Until recently, nitric oxide was only seen as one of the gaseous pollutants produced by car exhaust and cigarettes.

A documentary on the discovery of sugar-mimetic compounds and recent glycobiological research in europe and the US. These compounds may serve as a basis for the treatment of AIDS.The programme features the work of Dr. Linda Fellowes from the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and others, on DNJ (deoxynojirimycin), obtained from the leaves of the black mulberry tree. It also features the difficulties experienced with the clinical trials of a derivative of DNJ, butyl-DNJ.

An investigation into the various causes of asthma. The programme begins by looking at an severe outbreak in Barcelona 1981. The causes looked at include environmental, chemical, physical, and the body's immunological defence to parasitic worm infection, no longer required, but easily activated by airborne substances.
The programme ends with a look at research into the effect of exposure to allergens during the first year of life.

This programme traces the Wellcome Foundations production of insulin from 1922. All stages of the production from beef pancreases are shown: from the raw material to the final purification and quality control. The programme then goes on to look at the biotechnological production of insulin.

This film, made for the Directorate of Army Kinematography is a fascinating account of the wartime development, testing and production of (D.D.T. dichlor diphenyl trichlorethane). Amongst the footage shown are clips of the delousing of German troops captured after D- day, and that of the population of Naples to prevent an outbreak of cholera.
