Thixoforming At Sheffield - Shaping The Future

This programme explains a metal shaping process researched and developed at Sheffield. This process is called 'Thixoforming', and it falls within a generic class of processes called semi-solid metal forming - SSM.

The programme begins by looking at the traditional approaches of casting and forging, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each process. Thixoforming is believed to combine the benefits of these two techniques while removing the drawbacks.

By using live action combined with animated graphics, the programme follows the thixoforming process from the initial cut billet extruded tool steel right through to a formed product. The thixotropic properties of a billet of aluminium alloy which has been brought to its semi-solid state is strikingly demonstrated.
