Celebrating diversity: 175 years, 175 weeks, 175 faces
Over the 175 weeks leading up to our 175th anniversary on the 23 February 2016, we have been showcasing the wonderful diversity of our community in the form of 175 individual and inspirational stories.
Each story features someone involved in the chemical sciences who represents diversity in the broadest sense; someone who is a role model, champion and ambassador for an inclusive culture and diverse future generation of chemists.
Message from Lesley Yellowlees
175 Faces of Chemistry was launched in October 2012, by Professor Lesley Yellowlees, our first female president and a passionate campaigner for inclusion and diversity.
"I am delighted to see the launch of the 175 Faces of Chemistry initiative. During my presidency at the Royal Society of Chemistry I was keen to promote equality and diversity issues and this project makes an important contribution towards achieving this goal."
At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we recognise, respect and value people’s differences; and we are dedicated to growing and supporting an inclusive culture that builds upon the skills, knowledge and experience of the entire chemistry community.
We define diversity in the broadest sense, encompassing differences of culture, background and experience. These differences include the protected characteristics:
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- religion and belief
- sexual orientation
We've also included differences in political and religious affiliation, socioeconomic status, geography, job sector, career path and career stage.
