The synthesis of the first tetra- and penta-gold decaosmium clusters, X-ray structure analysis of [Os10Au4C(CO)24{P(C6H11)3}3]

The clusters [Os10Au4C(CO)24{PR3}3]{PR3= P(C6H11)3(3a), PPh3(3b), or PMe2Ph (3c)} and [Os10Au5C(CO)24{PPh3}4]+(4) have been prepared from the reaction of the dianion [Os10C(CO)24]2–(1) with [(AuPR3)3O]BF4 which involves the corresponding intermediate monoanions [Os10C(CO)24AuPR3]–; the structure of the cluster (3a) has been fully established by X-ray single crystal analysis and contains a novel heterometallic polyhedron consisting of fused Au4 and Os10 tetrahedra linked via a vertex and a capping edge, respectively.
