During the 15th NAPRECA symposium held in Khartoum Sudan in 2013, the NAPRECA Co-ordinating Board assigned NAPRECA - Tanzania the responsibility of hosting the 16th NAPRECA Symposium on Natural Products and their Applications. The symposium will be held from the 31st August – 3rd September, 2015 in Arusha. The 16th NAPRECA symposium will focus on the dissemination of results on research of natural products from African genetic resources, in the development of pharmaceuticals and agriculturals through chemistry, botany, pharmacology, and the environment. The broad base nature of the symposium with the theme:”Improved Health and Agriculture through Sustainable Exploration of Biodiversity for Drug Discovery and Bio-energy”, reflects the need for scientists involved in natural products research to pool together their research efforts and resources for socio-economic development of the sub region and contribute to the needs in alternative organic pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals while caring for the environment.
Congruent to all preceding symposia, the 16th NAPRECA symposium, aims at enabling scientists to disseminate their research results in the fields of natural products as important agents in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, and the need for environmental protection and conservation of Africa’s genetic resources.
The symposium will be preceed by a five day pre-symposium workshop aimed at training young African scientists especially students on the new emerging techniques in natural products research. Such workshops are normally held prior to NAPRECA symposia. The tradition has been found to be very useful since besides enhancing research skill of participants, they also create an atmosphere of interaction amongst young researchers within the sub-region, a gesture which stimulates future scientific collaboration, within the spirit of sustaining NAPRECA.
The pre-symposium workshop will be held from the 24th - 29th August at the Nelson Mandela-African Institute of Science and Technology in Arusha, while the symposium will be held from the 31st August – 3rd September at the Palace Hotel also in Arusha.
