PACN Congress on Biodiversity and Global Challenges: A Chemical Sciences Approach

30 November - 2 December 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Introduction
This year's Pan Africa Chemistry Network Annual Congress brought together over 150 participants from across Africa and the globe to discuss current research, new developments and crucial issues on the topic of Biodiversity and Global Challenges.

The conference reflected the diversity of science and research that impacts our understanding and utilisation of the rich biodiversity of Africa.

There is an enormous global challenge to increase resources available to the worlds growing population, in Africa there are indications of unsustainable use of natural resources. Therefore, we need to ensure that the bio diverse ecosystem is maintained alongside these pressures to ensure clean water, energy security, a health population and a reliable food supply.

Themes and Aims

The conference involved four sessions:

• Biodiversity and water
• Biodiversity and food
• Biodiversity and energy
• Biodiversity and healthcare

This conference explored the opportunities that these problems present for the chemical sciences, both to understand the issues and underlying sciences and to explore innovative solutions.
