6th Unilever-RSC International Symposium on Innovation in Sustainability: Air, Water and Materials

23 September 2015, Shanghai, China

Introduction
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is committed to ensuring that the chemical sciences contribute to their full potential in tackling the major global challenges of today and tomorrow, including issues of sustainable growth and development. Individuals, communities, companies, and nations all have a role to play in tackling global challenges, in order to provide every person in every country with water, food, energy and a home, in an environmentally and economically sustainable way.

Since 2010, the Unilever R&D Centre in Shanghai and the Royal Society of Chemistry have collaborated to organise a series of highly successful international symposia in China. This year sees the 6th in this series, and it will feature the theme of innovation in sustainability. Together with the local host institute, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University, the Royal Society of Chemistry and Unilever are proud to bring together leading experts from China and other countries in the research fields of water, air and sustainable resources. The scientific programme will primarily include a selection of lectures to discuss and showcase how chemical sciences can address the challenges in sustainability, including both policy and scientific aspects. In addition, a panel discussion will be held after the lectures, and the audience will have plenty of opportunities to interact with panel guests from industry and academia about their opinions and ideas in scientific innovation and sustainable development.

About Unilever

Unilever is one of world largest consumer goods companies. Our ambition is to double the size of the company while reducing environmental footprint and increasing positive social impact. The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP), launched in 2010, outlines how we will achieve our sustainable growth ambition. It is at the heart of our business model, applying to every brand, every market and throughout our value chain – from the raw materials we use in our products to the amount of electricity and water people consume when using them.
The USLP sets out three overarching goals for us to achieve by 2020:
• Improving health and wellbeing for 1 billion
• Halve the environmental impact of our products
• Enhance the livelihoods of millions of people

By driving sustainability into every corner of our business, the Plan is opening up new opportunities and driving growth.
• Through innovation and marketing we ensure our products meet social needs and help people live sustainably. The more popular our brands become, the more we grow.
• The more efficient we are at managing resources such as energy and raw materials, the more we lower our costs and reduce the risks to our business. And this means we have more to invest in sustainable innovation and brands.

The symposium is supported by Unilever, organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and hosted by Prof Xin Yang, Dean of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University. We sincerely hope this 6th Unilever-RSC international symposium will stimulate the exchange of ideas and experiences amongst all the participants.

Attendance at the one day meeting is free, although delegates are asked to register due to limited spaces. Students attending the symposium are encouraged to present a poster and prizes will be awarded for the best posters. Abstracts for a poster presentation should be submitted through this website using the link provided.
