Woad, wool and wee

18 November 2015, Helmshore Rossendale, United Kingdom

Introduction
Come along to Helmshore Mills Textile Museum to explore the chemistry behind historical textile processes. Activities will include a guided tour of the cotton spinning floor and woollen fulling  Mill, with demonstrations of our original working textile machinery. Discover how raw cotton and wool were transformed into yarn ready to be woven into cloth and how woollen cloth was traditionally finished using stale urine.  There will also be a fabric dyeing workshop, where students can experiment with different natural dyes and fibres. We advise students to bring their own packed lunch and wear warm layers (during the tour some areas of the Mill may be cold).
