Magic of Materials Summer School

5 July 2016 14:00 - 7 July 2016 15:30, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
This free, three day residential course for pupils at the end of year 10 or equivalent, has been designed to highlight the importance of materials science and engineering and demonstrate the wide range of careers available in STEM.  It will be running at St Paul's School in London from 5 to 7 July 2016.
The course features lectures and lab classes that link to the materials topics in the school curricula and give pupils the chance to experience hands-on experiments beyond the confines of the classroom.  It will give pupils the opportunity to broaden and deepen their understanding of this fascinating subject that relates to everything around us.  The sessions will be led by experts from industry and academia and the pupils will be split in to small groups of approximately seven so that they can fully engage with all the activities.  The groups will be mentored by two people in the early stages of their materials-related career.
There are 28 places available on the course (14 boys and 14 girls) and selection will be made on the basis of the statements written by pupils and teachers on the application form.  We will select a maximum of two pupils from a school but you are welcome to submit as many applications as you like.  All accommodation and meals are provided and there is a full pastoral care package outside of the formal teaching.  Delegates will stay in the school's on-site boarding house and girls and boys will be accommodated on separate floors.
We are looking for pupils with a genuine interest in STEM subjects that will immerse themselves in the course and in order to encourage pupils from disadvantages backgrounds and underrepresented groups to apply we are offering a bursary of up to £100 to help with the cost of travel to the venue.
