Birmingham and West Midlands Top of the Bench competition

5 September 2016 00:00 - 21 January 2017 16:00, Birmingham, United Kingdom

Introduction
This popular schools competition returns for another year in the West Midlands area. Teams of 4 students (2 x Y9, 1 x Y10, 1 x Y11) from schools in the RSC Birmingham and West Midlands area are invited to pit their practical and paper based problem-solving skills against each other.

The competition begins with a chemical knowledge written test sent out at the beginning of October to those schools who apply by September 30th. The tests must be returned by the October half-term. From this the top 7 teams are selected for the regional final at Birmingham University on Saturday January 21st 2017.

The winner of the regional final goes on to represent our region in the UK final at Loughborough University on Saturday 29th April 2017.

Both the regional and national finals will test factual chemical knowledge as well as a practical chemical problem-solving team exercise where teamwork will be an essential factor.
In 2016 the team from King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys won both the regional and national finals for the second year running.  As our regional competition is so tightly fought it probably means that our winning team should always do well in the national final.

The top 3 teams in the regional final are awarded book tokens for each team member plus a book token for the winning school. The national winners are awarded the Top of the Bench trophy and £500 for their school to spend on chemistry equipment as well as a gift voucher for each team member.
