Microscale chemistry at Flag Fen (Teacher event)

11 July 2017 16:00-18:30, Peterborough, United Kingdom

Introduction
Flag Fen is an internationally important Bronze Age archeological site. It houses many Bronze Age artefacts found around a wooden causeway and platform and some recently discovered Bronze Age log boats which are currently being conserved.  The survival of the archeology for over three thousand years is due to the distinct chemistry of the area, and this chemistry is being changed by the way people use the landscape. During the visit to Flag Fen you will explore the water chemistry of the site, collecting and testing samples from different areas of the site using microscale chemistry techniques and will consider how the variables measured could affect the archeology of the site and its survival.  You will also find out how chemistry is ensuring the survival of the incredibly rare Bronze Age log boats.
